Erasmus in Puerto de la Cruz? Meet people, practise languages and make Thursdays different
Every year, more international and Erasmus students choose Tenerife as their home for a few months. In Puerto de la Cruz, we meet young people coming from all over Europe and beyond — from countries such as Hungary, Poland, Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Romania and many more.
Many of them study nearby, including students at Iriarte, and suddenly find themselves discovering a new island, a new language and a completely new group of people.
And there is plenty to do in Puerto de la Cruz: explore the old town, spend the afternoon at Playa Jardín, walk along the coast, visit local cafés, discover Canarian food, explore the Botanical Garden, go hiking, enjoy live music or simply find a nice place to meet with friends.
But we also wanted to create somewhere where meeting new people could happen naturally.
That’s how Erasmus Hangouts at Amora Academy started. 💛
Practise languages without it feeling like a class
Amora Academy is a language academy in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, close to Iriarte, where we teach both English and Spanish.
Because languages and different cultures are already part of our everyday life, we wanted to open the academy to Erasmus and international students looking for a relaxed place to meet people, practise languages and do something different during the week.
Our Erasmus Hangouts take place on Thursdays, and you can come whenever you feel like it — there is no need to attend every week.
And don’t worry if your Spanish isn’t great yet. Activities can be explained in English, Spanish or a mixture of both, so everyone can take part.
Think of it as an informal language exchange and Erasmus meetup in Puerto de la Cruz, but instead of just sitting around a table talking, there is always something you can actually do together.

Erasmus Hangouts are not another language lesson.
There are no grammar exercises or exams. It’s simply a chance to use English and Spanish naturally, meet people from different countries and become more confident speaking while doing something fun.
If you’re spending your Erasmus in Tenerife, studying in Puerto de la Cruz or staying in the north of the island and you don’t know what to do on a Thursday, come and join us.
Come alone or bring a friend. Bring a board game, suggest an activity or simply turn up and see what everyone is doing.

So… what can you do?
Pretty much whatever everyone feels like that week.
Sewing and creative projects
Sheri, one of our teachers, loves sewing and can show you how to get started, help you create your own designs or work with you on a small project.
Karaoke
We have a PlayStation 2 and plenty of SingStar games. So yes, practising English or Spanish can sometimes mean loudly singing a 2000s song with someone you met half an hour ago.
Art and painting
We have art and painting materials available, so you can draw, paint, create something together or simply have a relaxed creative afternoon.
Board games
There are several board games at the academy, and you’re very welcome to bring your own favourites too. They’re one of the easiest ways to break the ice when meeting new people.
Dance
Our classroom has mirrors and plenty of space to move. And you’re in good hands: Sheri is also a professional Bollywood dancer, so dance sessions and even learning some Bollywood moves are definitely possible.
And these are just a few ideas.
